“I’ve been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.” Gal. 2:20 New American Standard Version
Isn’t there another way …?
When you’re crucified everything about you is exposed in the final moments of your life. Your past and present are on display. Whatever made up your life .. defined you .. controlled you .. damaged you .. drove you .. pushed you … and everything about you ends up condemned “with Christ”. That old you .. maybe not even a particularly bad you can no longer lead. In reality .. you can’t claim yourself first in anything. In reality .. we too often try to salvage the old life into something useful .. or at least of some value. It doesn’t have any value except as a remnant pointing toward a Redeemer. Your new reality is life given to you by Jesus. So if it is going to make any sense or serve any purpose .. you’re first priority is getting to know the One who gives you life. It is His life that explains who you are .. where you’ve come from .. and what you are living for. There is either Son-life or non-life. Each version of Life pursues a distinct path. Life in the Son is lived through learning to love the life that Christ is living in you. Your faith is the “foundation that makes your life worth living” (Heb. 11:1 MSG) There isn’t a reconcilable middle ground where you can find compromise or consensus between the old you and the new you. When you’re crucified in Christ .. you’re still alive .. but it’s not your life that is sustaining that life. Your grip on things begins to relax. Your grip on others begins to relax. Your grip on yourself begins to relax. That could mean years to some and instantly for others. Either way .. Jesus knows how much time it will take for His life to take in you. Words like trust .. faithfulness .. love .. assurance .. rest .. peace .. and thankfulness begin to give you the Father’s shape for your life. It’s no longer up to you to wear yourself out “trying” to please God. You’ve been given a new life shaped .. formed .. and forged by the life of Jesus. Your old life ended on a cross so that His risen life would become your everyday .. from-now-on life. And this Life only takes a moment …
“And this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.” 1 John 5:11-12 English Standard Version
