Everyday Living

April 19, 2011

“So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life — your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life — and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him.” Romans 12:1 The Message

The Jesus Road: (2) He’s forever changed your everyday life

Jesus final address was on a hill. Even though you weren’t there .. it was your address as well. He had to end up there so that you would be able to “take your everyday, working, playing, walking around life” and give it to God as an offering. You can’t do it unless Jesus walked up that hill for you. Actually, you wouldn’t want to. You’d be to anxious .. to fearful .. to self-consumed that whatever you offered was not good enough and would never be good enough. Jesus changed all that. He’s broken the endless and empty repetitions of false promises this world tries to sell you. Jesus walked up that hill so He could destroy the power of the outside-in liar. The life you receive in Christ is an inside-out life. God is at this moment working in you .. shaping His life in you .. and forming in you the  Son-fulness that belongs to everyone who trusts in that final address Jesus ended up on. You don’t have to live being dragged down that road of lies .. shame .. secrets .. and flu-like guilt. God wants to bring out the best in you because Jesus has already worn your worst. Too often , “we” keep trying to clean out the worst things we see in ourselves instead of trusting-in and relaxing-in the walking-around life that Jesus is living in us. It means your everyday life .. your work .. your marriage .. your concerns are God’s concerns. How could they not be? You’ve offered them to Him so He can do His inside-out best in you today. It may not feel like He is working fast enough or you may wonder if He really cares. He cares! He cared enough to walk up a hill. And His Spirit continues that very work He began in you at that final address. But of course … that “final address” is another of the world’s immature lies. His final address is your real home. Until then .. you have the grace-filled .. grace-saturated .. and grace-indwelling gift of living your life in Christ. It only takes a moment … to offer the Lord your everyday life …

Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you.”

About Ken Chester

I love seeing Christ become alive and real in someone's life. It is amazing what happens when Jesus moves in and starts to renovate a life. When I'm not riding my road bike, I am usually walking our corgi named Trinity (she came that way) and corgi-lab named Lowrider. Carolyn and I are transforming our backyard. And a book is on the way. ...Stay tuned ... Ken
