“God is sheer mercy and grace; not easily angered, he’s rich in love. … He doesn’t treat us as our sins deserve, nor pay us back in full for our wrongs.” Psalm 103:8, 10 The Message
Is there room in your life for extra space ..?
God has told us over and over what he is like: sheer mercy .. grace .. not easily angered .. rich in love . He’s told us so many times because He knows that sin causes us to create another image of who he is: limited mercy .. earned grace .. always angry .. and measured with love. You may have learned that image from parents. You may have lived under that suffocating image because of your own “unforgivable choices”. You may have grown up hearing that God is waiting for you to do your part before He will do his part. In truth .. God has loved you beyond measure. He has separated (don’t you love that word!) you from your sins. They no longer stick to you. There’s no record of them with your name on it. And if you want to know where they went .. all you have to do is watch a sunrise and sunset and you’ll discover how far God has separated you from your sin. Jesus journeyed from heaven to earth to move into your neighborhood so you would know that God is really sheer mercy and grace. He hung on a cross until sunset so you wouldn’t have to wear those sins any longer. He did all that for you. He was easily angered at any God-group that painted a picture of a God who refused to forgive your sins or demanded you earn his love. But to you He has never reacted in anger at your sins because He knows just how you are made. He’s made extra space in your life that He longs to fill with the riches of His love. That space was once choking you to death .. but now .. that space has been forgiven .. cleansed .. restored .. and filled with His Spirit. Jesus created the sunrise and sunset and he uses them to remind you of how much God loves you. It’s His daily reminder. And when His life lives in you .. you discover the grace-filled margins of your life that allow you to love richly. Have you given Him all the rooms in your heart? He’ll trade you a sunrise and a sunset. It only takes a moment …
“As high as heaven is over the earth, so strong is his love to those who fear him. And as far as sunrise is from sunset, he has separated us from our sins.” Psalm 103:11-12 The Message
