God’s Annoying Habit

May 9, 2011

“For my part, I am going to boast about nothing but the Cross of our Master, Jesus Christ. Because of that Cross, I have been crucified in relation to the world, set free from the stifling atmosphere of pleasing others and fitting into the little patterns that they dictate,” Galatians 6:14 The Message

Your list is pretty long … all those “little” wrongdoings. How would you begin to explain them: 1. They’re not as bad as others. 2. Nobody’s perfect. 3. Could you just overlook the really bad ones and balance out the rest with my “good-doings”? 4. Why don’t You try to live in all of this and see how You do? Boasting in a Cross is not very popular. It makes you stand out and at the same time it makes you approachable by others longing for true  freedom from all the pressures to fit in. Sometimes it just seems easier to just walk in all the stifling patterns around you until you are able to stand out on your own. It never works that way because you just get used to the habit of following worldly conforming patterns. That’s where that Cross makes a difference. You come to a place where you just can’t follow another “just-fit-in-dictator” and you quit by hanging all your wrongdoings on that Cross. And what do you find? You find that God has an annoying habit of forgiveness. It’s annoying because for so long you thought you had to balance the wrong things with right things before He would so His part. You discover it was a lie all along. His forgiveness habit is generous .. far more generous than you realize at first. But the longer you walk in it you realize that His habit-forming life of forgiving .. redeeming .. buyback love is worth waiting for every time and everyday. If you’re going to boast today or are looking to develop a new habit .. then start with the Cross. It’s where Jesus arrived at just the right time to buy you back from captivity. It’s where you’ll find space to live in Christ’s direction and not the suffocating  atmosphere of this world’s life-choking habits. There is a huge difference. You’ll find freedom right in the midst of others struggling to conform and anxiously worried about not being accepted. In Christ you are accepted today and generously loved for the road ahead.  It only takes a moment …

“If you, God, kept records of wrongdoings, who would stand a chance? As it turns out, forgiveness is your habit, and that’s why you’re worshipped. … O Israel, wait and watch for God — with God’s arrival comes love, with God’s arrival comes generous redemption. No doubt about it — he’ll redeem Israel, buy back Israel from captivity to sin.” Israel 130:3-4 .. 7-8 The Message

About Ken Chester

I love seeing Christ become alive and real in someone's life. It is amazing what happens when Jesus moves in and starts to renovate a life. When I'm not riding my road bike, I am usually walking our corgi named Trinity (she came that way) and corgi-lab named Lowrider. Carolyn and I are transforming our backyard. And a book is on the way. ...Stay tuned ... Ken
