Desert living … Jesus knows all about it…

November 7, 2011

“When Elijah saw how things were, he ran for dear life to Beersheba, far in the south of Judah. He left his young servant there and then went on into the desert another day’s journey. “Enough of this, God! Take my life — …” 1 Kings 19:3-5 The Message

It happens to all of us. You may flee to your desert or you may be led. It can happen after great efforts and events or lingering emptiness. You may run there for your life because it feels safe. You may end up there through no explainable reason .. at least at first glance. God’s never caught off guard or surprised when you walk into the wilderness areas of your heart. Those are the very places where routines and habits are forgotten and you’re just trying to survive. You may even catch yourself thinking that this-life would be best lived on the other-side. How could you not? The Lord has secured and promised your eternal life as without fear .. without famine .. and a life that will never fail. There are other wilderness times .. desert living moments that God uses and sometimes designs so that you will discover just how far He has gone for you. Jesus has been through every weakness in your life. He’s faced every test imaginable. And through them all He never chose to protect himself or surrendered what He is always: … truth alive. He lives today to be your help at every moment .. even in the desert when you feel abandoned and all alone. You can be surrounded by every good thing and still find your heart and spirit wandering all alone on the inside. Whatever you are facing? Whatever you are feeling? Whatever you are carrying? Whatever you are fretting over? Whatever you are holding so tightly? Jesus not only knows … but He offers you fresh mercy today .. fresh grace today .. fresh help .. fresh hope. He offers you His life. And it only takes a moment …

“Now Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wild. For forty wilderness days and nights he was tested by the Devil. He ate nothing during those days, and when the time was up he was hungry.” …. “He’s been through weakness and testing, experienced it all — all but the sin. So let’s walk right up to him and get what he is so ready to give. Take the mercy, accept the help.” Luke 4:1-2 / Hebrews 4:15-16 The Message

About Ken Chester

I love seeing Christ become alive and real in someone's life. It is amazing what happens when Jesus moves in and starts to renovate a life. When I'm not riding my road bike, I am usually walking our corgi named Trinity (she came that way) and corgi-lab named Lowrider. Carolyn and I are transforming our backyard. And a book is on the way. ...Stay tuned ... Ken
