Whatever ….?

November 23, 2011

“Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me — practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.” Philippians 4:8-9 English Standard Version

The heart of “whatever living” is loving the Lord with all of your heart .. soul .. mind .. and strength. It’s not just a full-time job; it’s your whole life and it takes the life of Christ living in you to live this way. Without Christ you will become exhausted just trying to think honorably .. justly .. purely .. lovely .. commendably .. full of praise in all situations. God isn’t calling you to live a fake life or pretend that harm-filled and harm-full circumstances don’t exist. One of God’s grace guarantees is that any life that He calls you to live and walk in is backed by His indwelling Spirit. He knows you can’t think this way about every possible situation you face or encounter. But He has called you to set this way of life as your everyday priority for following Jesus. If you do live this way you quickly discover how much room you have in your heart and mind for others. In fact you don’t find yourself thinking about yourself at all. And underneath is God’s secret promise that His peace will be with you. What if you told someone to “live out” everything they had seen in you.. heard in you .. and watched you and that if you did … God’s peace would be with them! The Apostle Paul didn’t carry around the guilt of what his life had once been. He lived out of the grace of what God had done in his life through Christ and he never tired reminding others that God’s guarantee was available to them .. and to you today. Your new life is in Christ and Christ’s life is always focused on “whatever” God could do and will do in another life. You’ll find yourself living “freely and lightly” in all kinds of situations. And whatever else … it only takes a moment …

“Don’t shuffle along, eyes to the ground, absorbed with the things right in front of you. Look up, and be alert to what is going on around Christ — that’s where the action is. See things from his perspective. Your old life is dead. Your new life — is with Christ in God. He is your life.” Colossians 3:2-3 The Message

About Ken Chester

I love seeing Christ become alive and real in someone's life. It is amazing what happens when Jesus moves in and starts to renovate a life. When I'm not riding my road bike, I am usually walking our corgi named Trinity (she came that way) and corgi-lab named Lowrider. Carolyn and I are transforming our backyard. And a book is on the way. ...Stay tuned ... Ken
