Patient Disruption

November 30, 2011

“The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.” … He is restraining himself on account of you, holding back the End because he doesn’t want anyone lost. He’s giving everyone space and time to change.” 2 Peter 3:9 New American Standard & The Message

We have a hard time believing that God is really patient with us. It’s Who He is. He’s told us over an over that He is gracious and compassionate .. slow to anger(patient plus steadfast love) … abounding in love and faithfulness. And yet, we so often carry around an image of a god who is ready to strike .. to punish .. and to abandon. Advent is indeed God’s patient and holy disruptive interruption of our broken and bankrupt patterns of living. Jesus is the disrupting One whose Life invites you to enter into the incomprehensible space to change .. to heal .. and to believe. It’s not easy. God uses a weather-worn shepherd named Amos to speak harshly into the sin-playgrounds and sin-palaces that His people were pretending to make life worth living. (Amos. 4:4-5 ..He’s still speaking that message today.) And then Jesus patiently offends each of us by saying that tax-collectors and prostitutes (sex-abused and sex-addicted) would be entering God’s kingdom before you because they believed who He is! Jesus is n’t saying they were better than you or that they deserved to be at the front of the line. He’s just speaking to each of us about what or who we let have the final say in our lives. His patience is indefatigable .. and His promise is irresistible. And He’s giving you the “space and time to change” because there is an End … and it only takes a moment …

“Your word I have treasured in my heart, that I may not sin against you.” … “I’ve banked your promises in the vault of my heart so I won’t sin myself bankrupt.” Ps. 119:11 New American Standard & The Message

About Ken Chester

I love seeing Christ become alive and real in someone's life. It is amazing what happens when Jesus moves in and starts to renovate a life. When I'm not riding my road bike, I am usually walking our corgi named Trinity (she came that way) and corgi-lab named Lowrider. Carolyn and I are transforming our backyard. And a book is on the way. ...Stay tuned ... Ken
