There’s Plenty of Disruption to go around …

December 7, 2011

“Don’t set people up as experts over your life, letting them tell you what to do. Save that authority for God; let him tell you what to do. No one else should carry the title of ‘Father’; you have only one Father, and he’s in heaven. And don’t let people maneuver you into taking charge of them. There is only one Life-Leader for you and them — Christ.” Matt. 23:9-10 The Message

Jesus could point out your flaws every morning if He was that kind of Lord. But He isn’t! God could warn you over and over about His coming Judgment Day until you lived in constant fear if He was that kind of God. But He isn’t! The Holy Spirit could weigh you down with all of your sins until your bones were brittle and dry if He was that kind of Spirit. And He isn’t! Instead .. the Lord calls you into a life of redemption and restoration that He initiates .. maintains .. and multiplies … because He is that kind of Lord. We “advent” toward that unbelievable story of God reaching into all of our life-disrupting layers and discovering never too soon or too late that there is only one Life-Leader named Jesus. It’s called faith: “the foundation that makes ‘my’ life worth living”. Like David we sometimes silently (and not so silently) cry out: “Don’t dump me, God; my God, don’t stand me up. Hurry and help me; I want some wide-open space in my life.”(Ps. 38:21-22) God sees all too clearly where we’re trying time and again to live outwardly for others without Him living inwardly in us. The only way to show us who He is was for Jesus to inhabit our disruptive lives and invite us to live in the “wide-open spaces” of His life. His birth disrupts our abnormal attempts to make this life normal. His death disrupts all of our illegitimate schemes to fix our lives without Him. And His resurrection disrupts our broken belief systems by calling us to trust His grace .. trust His abiding life .. and trust His Word so you can actually learn to be yourself … in Christ. It only takes a moment …

“Do you want to stand out? Then step down. Be a servant. If you puff yourself up, you’ll get the wind knocked out of you. But if you are content to simply be yourself, your life will count for plenty.” Matt. 23:11-12 The Message

About Ken Chester

I love seeing Christ become alive and real in someone's life. It is amazing what happens when Jesus moves in and starts to renovate a life. When I'm not riding my road bike, I am usually walking our corgi named Trinity (she came that way) and corgi-lab named Lowrider. Carolyn and I are transforming our backyard. And a book is on the way. ...Stay tuned ... Ken
