Laughter .. Park Benches .. and Mud Pie Disruptions

December 16, 2011

“I waited and waited and waited for God. At last he looked; finally he listened. He lifted me out of the ditch, pulled me from deep mud. He stood me up on a solid rock to make sure I wouldn’t slip. He taught me how to sing the latest God-song, a praise-song to our God. More and more people are seeing this: they enter the mystery, abandoning themselves to God.” Ps. 40:1-3 The Message

Waiting on God will wear you out. That’s exactly what it is supposed to do because waiting on God is a lot about “abandoning you” … that part of “you” that gets stuck in yourself .. and resists God’s help. And God “waited” as well until He became like you .. in order to finally and forever free your life from being stuck in yourself .. in sin .. and in all the ditches and mud pits that you face everyday. He gave an old prophet a “word” .. an image .. of your life spinning tales .. living in safety .. and growing old with little ones running around your feet. God doesn’t spin tales … He has promised you Life that is redeemed .. restored .. and rejoicing. That life is in Christ. It cannot be found anywhere else. And everytime we try we end up in ditches .. stuck .. and calling out to the Lord for help. We get impatient when God doesn’t act “fast”enough. And God…? He is the God-of-the-Angel-Armies. He is our Help. He is your Help. There isn’t a ditch that Jesus hasn’t stepped into to lift up a fallen life. There isn’t a mud pit where He hasn’t reached down and lifted up a mud-caked life and cleaned them up. He still does today. God’s laughter is wrapped in grace. His park bench is His Life at rest in you. And His Mud Pie Disruptions are His promise to complete the “the good work” He has begun in you in Christ. It only takes a moment …

“A Message from God-of-the-Angel-Armies: Old men and old women will come back to Jerusalem, sit on benches on the streets and spin tales, move around safely with their canes — a good city to grow old in. And boys and girls will fill the public parks, laughing and playing – a good city to grow up in.” Zech. 8:4-5 The Message

About Ken Chester

I love seeing Christ become alive and real in someone's life. It is amazing what happens when Jesus moves in and starts to renovate a life. When I'm not riding my road bike, I am usually walking our corgi named Trinity (she came that way) and corgi-lab named Lowrider. Carolyn and I are transforming our backyard. And a book is on the way. ...Stay tuned ... Ken
