Nothing less …

June 21, 2012

“There should be a consistency that runs through us all. For Jesus doesn’t change — yesterday, today, tomorrow, he’s always totally himself.” Hebrews 13:8 The Message

Your life changed the moment you exchanged lives with Christ. The life he exchanged with you was a “life that doesn’t change”. He is always going to be the same in you. He can never be less that “totally himself”. The world you live in opposes that kind of consistency. Because one area that Jesus’s life brings into the light is our patched together lives of inconsistencies. The world responds by offering you an endless array of products to help you with your life in Christ. And yet, Jesus promised you that He would never leave you abandoned .. love you less .. or lose sight of you for one moment. He can’t because He is always totally himself within you .. even when you aren’t totally yourself or are resisting his grace-shaping ways for your life. And grace is indeed the “good ground” that Jesus wants for you. The world around you doesn’t want you to abandon Jesus or give up. They just want you to add something besides Him to your life .. or .. if that doesn’t work then make Him a little less important over your life. Everyone faces these faceless battles everyday. Do you really need to rely on Christ to be the One whose life is your identity .. sufficiency .. and faithfulness? If you’ll just make Him a little less, you can assert yourself .. right? You can always come back to Him when you really need him .. right? God expects you to adapt to your surroundings .. even if that means making him less than totally himself for a period of time .. right? Those faceless battles appear at different life corners and seasons. This same Jesus who is the same yesterday .. today .. and tomorrow will only be totally himself for you. Anything less is not the life he exchanged for you. Nothing less can truly satisfy the deepest places of your life. As one old wilderness pastor wrote: “The focus becomes clear and sharp again: God’s action in Jesus. And we are free once more for the act of faith, the one human action in which we don’t get in the way but on the way” And it only takes a moment …

“Don’t be lured away from him by the latest speculations about him. The grace of Christ is the only good ground for life. Products named after Christ don’t seem to do much for those who buy them.” Hebrews 13:9 The Message

About Ken Chester

I love seeing Christ become alive and real in someone's life. It is amazing what happens when Jesus moves in and starts to renovate a life. When I'm not riding my road bike, I am usually walking our corgi named Trinity (she came that way) and corgi-lab named Lowrider. Carolyn and I are transforming our backyard. And a book is on the way. ...Stay tuned ... Ken
