The Approachable Gospel…

July 2, 2012

“Deeply moved .. Jesus put out his hand, touched him, and said’ “I want to. Be clean.”” Mark 1:40 The Message

Anyone can approach Jesus and have his complete attention .. at anytime .. and anywhere. No one would ever expect a Messiah to be described as a “scrawny seedling .. looked down on .. or (someone) who knew pain firsthand” but Jesus was all of these and more. Jesus isn’t afraid to touch your leprosy .. that spot or place you fear if “they” find out they will reject you and leave you as unwanted and unloved. But Jesus isn’t like that. He not only welcomes your presence He “wants to” reach out his hand and touch your life. His life is the approachable gospel: the good news that you no longer have to carry around the burden .. hide a wounded heart .. try to disguise loneliness .. or convince yourself that an anxious spirit is normal. No one imagines a savior who appears so weak and so un-almighty. But when you encounter this Jesus you realize that if He had come in any other form you probably wouldn’t have approached him. You notice that He understands every ounce of pain in your life. He doesn’t intimidate .. He invites you into His life. And even more so .. He doesn’t push himself on you. He’s not a self-promoting savior. If anything, you begin to notice just how selfless He really is. It doesn’t matter where you are .. who is looking on .. whatever the consequences .. Jesus is completely identified with your life. There is no one more important. There is no place in time more important than this time with you. Sin makes you think that you don’t really matter or make a difference. That’s the exact place where Jesus reaches out and touches your leprosy. One of the hardest truths to really accept is that Jesus is “deeply moved” about the places you struggle in your life. He doesn’t rate your life against anyone else. What matters to Him is that your life find wholeness in His life. And for that He became a scrubby plant .. passed over .. and someone we thought deserved what He got on the cross. And what does He do: He became approachable for anything in your life. And it only takes a moment …

“.. a scrawny seedling .. scrubby plant in a parched field .. nothing attractive about him .. looked down on .. passed over .. man who suffered .. who knew pain firsthand ..” Isaiah 53:2-3

About Ken Chester

I love seeing Christ become alive and real in someone's life. It is amazing what happens when Jesus moves in and starts to renovate a life. When I'm not riding my road bike, I am usually walking our corgi named Trinity (she came that way) and corgi-lab named Lowrider. Carolyn and I are transforming our backyard. And a book is on the way. ...Stay tuned ... Ken
