The If Only Gospel …

July 6, 2012

“A woman who had suffered a condition of hemorrhaging for twelve years — a long succession of physicians had treated her, and treated her badly, taking all her money and leaving her worse off than before — had heard about Jesus. … “If I can put a finger on his robe, I can get well.” … Jesus said to her, “Daughter, you took a risk of faith, and now you’re healed and whole. Live well, live blessed! Be healed of your plague.”

What does it take to get to “if only”? In her case .. she had lived twelve years suffering .. suffering in shame .. and suffering without any hope. It wasn’t that way at first. She believed and hoped she could find a cure and that her body would become well and she could become accepted again .. and maybe experience some joy or happiness. But it didn’t happen. She suffered and grew worse. And in the depths of hopelessness she found the faith of “If Only”. There was SomeOne with stories going out about how He had healed .. cured .. made well .. and could it be possible for her? She wasn’t supposed to be in the crowd. It wasn’t allowed or accepted. It didn’t matter to her. She believed that Jesus was the only hope and cure for her life. So .. she did what any of us might do before the day is over. We approach Jesus unseen and whisper a prayer hoping He would just intervene and inject His life into our lingering or unrelenting suffering. It doesn’t matter to Jesus if it is twelve years .. twenty years .. a month .. days .. or hours. One unseen area of your life may be the infection of years. He’s not too busy .. to distracted .. or too out of reach. The If Only Gospel is NOT for when you’ve exhausted everything else. God isn’t waiting for you to wear yourself out or wear out your welcome before you come to Him. He is still the SameOne who was the SomeOne for a discarded daughter created in the image of God. The life Jesus offered her is the same life He offers you today. The Gospel is more real than anything you can see in front of you at this moment. If only you’ll just reach out … and it only takes a moment …

“I started preaching this life-change — this radical turn to God and everything it meant in everyday life — right there in Damascus, went on the Jerusalem and the surrounding countryside, and from there to the whole world.” Acts 26:20 The Message

About Ken Chester

I love seeing Christ become alive and real in someone's life. It is amazing what happens when Jesus moves in and starts to renovate a life. When I'm not riding my road bike, I am usually walking our corgi named Trinity (she came that way) and corgi-lab named Lowrider. Carolyn and I are transforming our backyard. And a book is on the way. ...Stay tuned ... Ken
