Habit-forming lives …

August 2, 2012

“While it was still night, way before dawn, he got up and went out to a secluded spot to prayed. … One day he was praying in a certain place. When he was finished, one of his disciples said, “Master, teach us to pray just as John taught his disciples.” Mark 2:35/Luke 11:1 The Message

There are habits you want to break and habits you want to catch. Jesus breathed a habit of prayer. It was where he went to spend time with his Father. It was where he recharged his life. It was where his life intersected with life. He prayed in public .. out loud .. with his eyes open .. all alone .. in quiet confidence .. in deep agony .. and when he was completely spent. Whatever it was he was doing, his disciples wanted to learn how to pray like they saw him praying. It had to be unlike anything they had ever witnessed. They wanted to learn how to pray. And so do you. If you follow Jesus you begin to long for “the habit” of praying like Jesus. At first it is about adding something on top of your already filled life. It becomes something that shapes the rest of your life … just like it did Jesus. Jesus could have left you an exhausting formula but he didn’t. Instead, he invited you to begin your habit with the word: Father. For most people, God is an all-encompassing image. Father is an image of relationship .. intimate .. accepting .. interested .. totally available .. anytime and anywhere. Jesus knows that if you know God as your Father like this … you will live the same habit-forming life he lived. Father is an image Jesus came to restore. It is also a relationship he came to establish. It is the very life He came to give with his own life. Jesus could have scolded his disciples for not praying more. He could have made prayer so difficult that no one could live with hope. Instead .. he placed everything about your day-to-day life in direct connection to knowing God .. trusting him as your Father .. and leaving all of your concerns in His hands. And just as Jesus’ life was completely available .. so your life will become available for God’s purposes. When you pray, say, “Father …” … and the rest will come out. It only takes a moment …

“So he said, “When you pray, say, Father, Reveal who you are. Set the world right. Keep us alive with three square meals. Keep us forgiven with you and forgiving others. Keep us safe from ourselves and the Devil.” Luke 11:2-4 The Message

About Ken Chester

I love seeing Christ become alive and real in someone's life. It is amazing what happens when Jesus moves in and starts to renovate a life. When I'm not riding my road bike, I am usually walking our corgi named Trinity (she came that way) and corgi-lab named Lowrider. Carolyn and I are transforming our backyard. And a book is on the way. ...Stay tuned ... Ken
