Love like that ….

“Watch what God does, and then do it, like children who learn proper behavior from their parents. Mostly what God does is love you. Keep company with him and learn a life of love. Observe how Christ loved us. His love was not cautious but extravagant. He didn’t love in order to get something from us but to give everything of himself to us. Love like that.” Ephesians 5:1-2 The Message

You’ve been called into a relationship with God that is unlike any relationship on earth. Christ gave “everything of himself to us” … that is the definition of what God’s love looks like for you life. That is the definition of how you are to love the people in your world. The world loves conditionally and measures out who should be loved and how much to love. You should always hold yourself back in case you get hurt. That’s the world’s fallen recipe for love. But God didn’t hold anything back to love you. His love for you didn’t change regardless of what you had done or whatever the circumstances were when you encountered Him. It didn’t matter to him how good you were or how bad you were. When you were cautious towards Him … Jesus was extravagant towards you. That’s the only way He knows when it comes to His love. And the life He wants to live in you is just as extravagant when it comes to love. With Jesus it’s not about him doing his best but bringing out the best of you. That means working through all the layers of your life: the hidden parts .. the bruised parts .. the insecure parts .. the unfinished parts .. the fearful parts .. and even the self-confident parts. That’s how you are to love: to bring out the best in others. It’s not fair. You probably won’t be recognized for it. You may not be thanked for it. You may even wonder if it is really worth it? That’s why we keep our eyes on Jesus and how he loved. Because if you stop keeping company with the Lord … you’ll love less and love poorly. And if you keep company with Jesus … you’ll learn to love extravagantly. It’s how He is loving you at this moment. Without Him .. you can’t love anyone very well. It only takes a moment …
