Who would “hire” you …?

October 23, 2012

“Therefore they said to Him, “What shall we do, so that we may work the works of God?” Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom he sent.” John 6:28-29 New American Standard

What is the center of your work? Jesus said that your real work for God was believing in Him. This is to be the undiluted .. undivided .. and undistorted center of how you live your life. And the truth is: it is impossible “to do” this work without Christ being your life. There are just too many pressures and not-so-subtle distractions that want you to let go of Christ and take care of yourself. Of course you can believe .. you just don’t need to make it the foundation of all of your priorities. As one ‘experienced’ pastor remarked: ” You must make major adjustments in your life to join God in what He is doing.” That just runs counter against your old nature that hopes that God will adjust his world to bless your world. Can you just imagine filling out an application and actually writing that the “life” they were hiring was Christ who is living in you? Of course you wouldn’t write that, but that is exactly why every position in this world is a mission post where Christ may be seen through your life. So many of the conflicts we face around work are those battles between what I want and the life that Christ is living in me. No one may even notice it on the outside. When you enter into this “work” of believing you discover just how much work it really is to let Christ be your life. And the great news is you aren’t expected to figure it out on your own. The Holy Spirit is doing the work of shaping .. conforming .. convicting .. assuring .. restoring .. renewing .. and pouring into you all that you need in the “work” of believing. The work of believing is learning to love the life that Christ is living in you. And who would hire you? God will … and He knows exactly where to place you. It only takes a moment …

“I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself up for me.”

About Ken Chester

I love seeing Christ become alive and real in someone's life. It is amazing what happens when Jesus moves in and starts to renovate a life. When I'm not riding my road bike, I am usually walking our corgi named Trinity (she came that way) and corgi-lab named Lowrider. Carolyn and I are transforming our backyard. And a book is on the way. ...Stay tuned ... Ken
