Do you love Me … ?

October 30, 2012

“Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these? ..”Yes, Master, you know I love you”. Jesus said, “Feed my lambs. He then asked a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” “Yes , Master, you know I love you.” Jesus said, “Shepherd my sheep.” Then he said a third time: “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” … Peter was upset … “Master, you know everything there is to know. You’ve got to know that I love you.” … Jesus said, “Feed my sheep …” John 21:15-18 The Message

He asked simple question. He could have condemned but he didn’t. He could have demanded but he didn’t. He could have rejected but he didn’t. Instead, He asked a man what was in the center of his heart. It is the same question Jesus asks you: “Do you love Me?”. His question may come at the most awkward moment of your life. It may happen around some seemingly unrelated incident. You may think that Jesus is trying to expose you for a fraud. But he’s after your heart .. that place that is the center of everything in you. It’s right there that you may have denied knowing him. It right there where he comes to draw out the pain of your failure. It’s right at that place where you can’t forgive yourself. You may think Him unkind when he asks you the question. You may think He is too demanding. You may not be able to even answer because of the shame you are carrying around. How could he ever use someone like you? Jesus asks the question right at that place where you often disqualify yourself. It will cause you to shrink back and not risk reaching out to someone who is carrying around the same weight you carried before the question. And when you reach that place: “Jesus .. you know everything there is to know. You’ve got to know that I love you” .. you realize that the love you have for Jesus comes from his love for you. Only Jesus can restore you in those places where you’ve failed with the best of intentions .. denied him under the pressure of being accepted by others .. or even just grown distant in your heart. He knows you through and through and He’s not shaking His head in disgust. It’s his question that opens a damaged heart .. a chained heart .. and rusted shut heart to a Christ-rhythmed life that lives freely and lightly. His question and your answer ..? It only takes a moment …

“Walk with me, work with me — watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.” Matt. 11:30 The Message

About Ken Chester

I love seeing Christ become alive and real in someone's life. It is amazing what happens when Jesus moves in and starts to renovate a life. When I'm not riding my road bike, I am usually walking our corgi named Trinity (she came that way) and corgi-lab named Lowrider. Carolyn and I are transforming our backyard. And a book is on the way. ...Stay tuned ... Ken
