When not being ready is the right thing …

November 1, 2012

“Christ arrives right on time to make this happen. He didn’t, and doesn’t wait for us to get ready. He presented himself for this sacrificial death when we were far too weak and rebellious to do anything to get ourselves ready.” Romans 5:6 The Message

Most of us like to at least think that we have some control over our lives. We don’t like to image ourselves “weak and rebellious”. We like to think we are on time for most things in our lives. It’s been that way for thousands of years. Isn’t it great that God doesn’t wait for us to get ready. He steps into the weakest .. rebellious .. out of control .. late and getting later areas of our lives at exactly “right on time”. When we are at our worst with nothing to offer God .. He makes friends with us through his Son. It is not exactly the way you usually go about making friends. You usually look for friends with similar interests or share the same values or discover you like the same people. But God actually wants a friendship with you when you were at your worst. It usually takes us a long time to really begin to trust how deep and expansive Christ’s resurrection life is working in our lives. He arrives right on time when you are out of time .. out of answers .. and out of excuses. Your best intentions don’t win Him over. Your worst moments become the very places where you discover that the Lord wants to be your friend. And not an arm’s length friend. Christ, with all of his power, steps into your life when you are “powerless” to help yourself. You’ve nothing to offer. In some ways you are even powerless to offer yourself. He shows up on time .. ready .. and exchanges his life for yours. If He does all of this at your worst … just imagine how deep and expansive His love and life are working in you at this moment. He’s not waiting for you to clean up all those places inside of your heart. And truthfully, Jesus knows that you’ll never be ready or on time. With Jesus … it only takes a moment …

“If when we were at our worst, we were put on friendly terms with God by the sacrificial death of his Son, now that we’re at our best, just think of how our lives will expand and deepen by means of his resurrection life!” Romans 5:10 The Message

About Ken Chester

I love seeing Christ become alive and real in someone's life. It is amazing what happens when Jesus moves in and starts to renovate a life. When I'm not riding my road bike, I am usually walking our corgi named Trinity (she came that way) and corgi-lab named Lowrider. Carolyn and I are transforming our backyard. And a book is on the way. ...Stay tuned ... Ken
