The Gospel Scandal: Unannounced

November 20, 2012

“It so happened that as Zachariah was carrying out his priestly duties before God … Unannounced, an angel of God appeared … Zachariah was paralyzed with fear. … “Don’t fear Zachariah, your prayer has been heard. Elizabeth, your wife, will bear a son to you.” Luke 1:8-15 The Message

His job description could have simply read: man of faith. Believing was part of his everyday duties. It didn’t matter if anyone saw him of not. God saw him. Just like He sees you. Zachariah was theologically trained but faith deprived. He wasn’t expecting God to show up. It was just a “random” draw that he was even chosen to be in God’s sanctuary. It was his job. All he had to do was walk in .. perform his theological duties .. and walk out. But then it happened: Unannounced! Faith is like that. You can go through the motions and everything looks acceptable on the outside .. even envied by others. But God has a history of looking at hearts .. our hearts .. your heart. He knows exactly what real faith looks like in you. He knows where you believe and where you are just going through the motions. As an 86 year old double-hip replacement Major once said: “It is not a matter of doing our best for Him .. but of Christ being His best in us.” This is the Gospel Scandal the Lord brings unannounced into your life. It happens around the very visible things as well as the rarely seen things in your life. “Do you expect me to believe this?” … could be your answer at any given moment when confronted in the presence of Christ. But praise be to the God whose words are true and on time. His Words are on time because Jesus is time itself for you. He won’t expel you when you are caught off guard or out of step. You’ll probably feel like failure and disqualify yourself … but He won’t. He’s come with good news .. glad news .. and grace news for you. And that Word that becomes life in you also becomes a believing Life in you. Unannounced and unprepared …? It only takes a moment …

“Zachariah said to the angel, “Do you expect me to believe this? I am an old man and my wife is an old woman. But the angel said, “I am Gabriel, the sentinel of God, sent especially to bring you this glad news. But because you won’t believe me, you’ll be unable to say a word until the day of your son’s birth. Every word I’ve spoken to you will come true on time — God’s time.” Luke 1:18-20 The Message

About Ken Chester

I love seeing Christ become alive and real in someone's life. It is amazing what happens when Jesus moves in and starts to renovate a life. When I'm not riding my road bike, I am usually walking our corgi named Trinity (she came that way) and corgi-lab named Lowrider. Carolyn and I are transforming our backyard. And a book is on the way. ...Stay tuned ... Ken
