Birthing a foot-washing revolution …?

December 13, 2012

“Jesus knew that the Father had put him in complete charge of everything, that he came from God and was on his way back to God. So, he got up from the supper table, set aside his robe, and put on an apron. Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the feet of his disciples, drying them with his apron.” John 13:3-4 The Message

Who aspires to be a Foot-Washer? How would you even train for such a role? What really happens inside of you when this Gospel is birthed? You probably aren’t going to wash someone’s feet today. And yet, Jesus has indelibly left his fingerprints in your mind and upon your heart by washing feet. He said he left an example. He didn’t make it a law. He showed what God’s love looks like and left it for you to remember. There are a ‘thousand ways’ to wash feet. Jesus is simply wanting your life to be His hands and feet today. “All our obedience, every resolve to do good, and every work of faith is “by his power” and so that the Lord Jesus would be glorified because of the grace he gives. Yes, we must pursue obedience, but that obedience must always be cruciform, formed by Christ’s cross. We must seek to obey because of the cross, find the grace to obey because of the cross, and live free from condemnation whether we succeed or fail in the light of the cross. The cross must be our only story, as Paul boldly proclaimed: “For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified” (1Cor.2:2)” (Elise Fitzpatrick & Dennis Johnson: Counsel From The Cross) The world says a christian should act nice .. be silent and respectful .. and accept everyone as the same. That’s not the life that Jesus lives in you by faith. He still washes feet. He still does the unexpected. His love is sometimes uncomfortably comforting. His life sets you free. Not worldly free .. but grace freed to know Christ in the stifling and suffocating atmosphere of dirty feet. Is their room in your life for foot washing today? What would it look like? It only takes a moment …

“For my part, I am going to boast about nothing but the Cross of our Master, Jesus Christ. Because of that Cross, I have been crucified in relation to the world, set free from the stifling atmosphere of pleasing others and fitting into the little patterns that they dictate.” Galatians 6:14 The Message

About Ken Chester

I love seeing Christ become alive and real in someone's life. It is amazing what happens when Jesus moves in and starts to renovate a life. When I'm not riding my road bike, I am usually walking our corgi named Trinity (she came that way) and corgi-lab named Lowrider. Carolyn and I are transforming our backyard. And a book is on the way. ...Stay tuned ... Ken
