Be careful of what you aren’t asking for ….

December 14, 2012

“God spoke again to Ahaz. This time he said, “Ask for a sign from your God. Ask anything. Be extravagant. Ask for the moon!” But Ahaz said, “I’d never do that. I’d never make demands like that on God!” So Isaiah told him, “Then listen to this, government of David! It’s bad enough that you make people tired with your pious, timid hypocrisies, but now you’re making God tired. So the Master is going to give you a sign anyway. Watch for this: A girl who is presently a virgin will get pregnant. She’ll bear a son and name him Immanuel (God-With-Us). Isaiah 7:10-14 The Message

Our spiritual biographies are littered with counterfeit gods .. settling for diseased filled promises .. and pretending to make peace with sin. You may think this isn’t your life at all. Really? You may even be offended that your life would ever be associated with such images. Really? Isaiah was a God-voice. His life was God’s continuous voice of calling his people to return .. to repent .. and to open up their hearts and lives to His redeeming love. God told Isaiah to offer King Ahaz a blank check. (You’ll find him listed in the genealogy of Jesus in Matt. 1:9). “Ask for a sign .. ask anything .. be extravagant .. ask for the moon!” Ahaz is described as being so afraid of his enemies that he “shook like a tree in the wind”.(7:2) And when Ahaz refused God told him a virgin would have a son named Immanuel. God was giving him what he wasn’t asking for. Here is the great mystery of your life .. sin .. and God’s Redeeming Love named Immanuel. If God gave you a blank check what would you ask for? The good news for you is He has already written the check. And it has paid for everything associated with your life. Really!!! Whatever is before your life today? It only takes a moment …

“He left there and returned to his hometown. His disciples came along. On the Sabbath, he gave a lecture in the meeting place. He made a real hit, impressing everyone. “We had no idea he was this good!” they said. “How did he get so wise all of a sudden, get such ability?” But in the next breath they were cutting him down: “He’s just a carpenter—Mary’s boy. We’ve known him since he was a kid. We know his brothers, James, Justus, Jude, and Simon, and his sisters. Who does he think he is?” They tripped over what little they knew about him and fell, sprawling. And they never got any further.” Mark 6:1-3

About Ken Chester

I love seeing Christ become alive and real in someone's life. It is amazing what happens when Jesus moves in and starts to renovate a life. When I'm not riding my road bike, I am usually walking our corgi named Trinity (she came that way) and corgi-lab named Lowrider. Carolyn and I are transforming our backyard. And a book is on the way. ...Stay tuned ... Ken
