Settling down …

January 10, 2013

“Your salvation requires you to turn back to me and stop your silly efforts to save yourselves. Your strength will come from settling down in complete dependence on me — the very thing you’ve been unwilling to do. … But God’s not finished. He’s waiting around to be gracious to you. He’s gathering strength to show mercy to you. God takes the time to do everything right — everything. Those who wait around for him are the lucky ones.” Isaiah 30:15-18 The Message

It is an old story: God’s longing is for you. He longs for you to encounter Him .. to experience Him .. and to enter into life with Him. He longs to quiet your deepest fear .. cleanse you from paralyzing secrets .. restore your true identity .. and call you into His mission where you are living. Sometimes it seems like God’s love or answers are distant and off the mark. Why does He seem to take so long to reach through all the layers of your life? Maybe because He is in the holy business of making a whole person out of you. Sometimes He has to wait .. patiently .. always in outstretched love .. and abundant in mercy to show you His grace. Our history is filled with our repeated attempts to save ourselves and celebrate our independence. God recorded his words about his Son: ..”marked by my love .. delight of my life”. They are Son words that are meant for you so that you would know that God’s longing is for you. The same love that marked Jesus is the same love that God wants to mark upon your heart. He’ll meet you in your desert .. all alone or in the center of crowds. He’ll find you in your wilderness and settle you down in the true strength of being completely dependent upon Him. God alone knows what that looks like and means for each one of our lives. It was the same with Jesus. And Jesus will be the same for you today. And He only takes a moment …

“The moment Jesus came up out of the baptismal waters, the skies opened up and he saw God’s Spirit — it looked like a dove — descending and landing on him. And along with the Spirit, a voice: “This is my Son, chosen and marked by my love, delight of my life.” Matt. 3:16-17 The Message

About Ken Chester

I love seeing Christ become alive and real in someone's life. It is amazing what happens when Jesus moves in and starts to renovate a life. When I'm not riding my road bike, I am usually walking our corgi named Trinity (she came that way) and corgi-lab named Lowrider. Carolyn and I are transforming our backyard. And a book is on the way. ...Stay tuned ... Ken

  1. Ken, you’ll never know how much we appreciate GRACE-GRIPPED. Our grandson, Austin and his wife, Elizabeth were expecting their first baby, our great-granddaughter, Addison Grace. The baby had problems beginning her third month in the womb. They became more serious as time went on. They were forced to induce Elizabeth this past Thurs. Our daughter, Leigh Ann, and Elizabeth’s mother flew out to Monterey, Ca. on Thurs, and kept us up-dated the entire way Addison was born on Good Friday at 6:10 a.m. The prayers of her parents was that she would live long enough for her to meet her parents, and open her eyes. She answered their prayers and clasped Austin’s finger in her short life of only 20 min. She was a beautiful little angel, and we know now that she is with Jesus, completely healed. Her celebration of her life will be Wed. at 2:00.
The Grace-Gripped touched our hearts in such a remarkable way. Thank You!
