Believing …

February 12, 2013

“What can we do to perform the works of God? they asked.” Jesus replied, “This is the work of God; that you believe in the One He has sent.” John 6:28-29 Holman Christian Standard

The hardest work you will do today is “believing”. Everyone believes in something. It doesn’t matter how high you climb or how low you descend. There are so many seemingly unconnected moments that require little believing. It doesn’t take much to find yourself at the center of managing your world. It doesn’t take much to find yourself tired.. worn out .. and exhausted from trying to hold everything together. It doesn’t take much to find yourself suddenly overwhelmed. Jesus isn’t describing a simple world where just believing in Him will make everything turn out alright. The kind of believing that Jesus talks about is focused on him. You’ve come to a moment where you realize that running your own life and managing everything that you do really isn’t working. It might for a short time. You have to decide Who you are going to trust in today. It might be yourself. It might be a collection of other persons. It might be in The One who holds your life together. A godless world always wants you to operate from a godless position. They want you to look at life as if it exists only for now and the future is something that you have to control. But Jesus offers you another life of believing that it is His life that makes your life worth living. Jesus isn’t trying to force you to become someone you aren’t. The kind of believing-life he is offering you is one where you find yourself experiencing a peace that wasn’t there before. You didn’t earn it. You discover that any area of your life where you aren’t believing in Christ shows all the signs of dis-ease .. neglect .. and frustration. You don’t simply “believe” in order to get something from God. You “believe” that Jesus is true and the life he is offering you today is based on Who He is. On the outside nothing may change. But on the inside, you’re not the same person. Jesus has already assured you that you are going to face struggles in this godless world. But He hasn’t abandoned you. Instead, He will abide in you. Who or What will you choose to believe in? It only takes a moment …

“I’ve told you all this so that trusting me, you will be unshakable and assured, deeply at peace. In this godless world you will continue to experience difficulties. But take heart! I’ve conquered the world.” John 16:33 The Message

About Ken Chester

I love seeing Christ become alive and real in someone's life. It is amazing what happens when Jesus moves in and starts to renovate a life. When I'm not riding my road bike, I am usually walking our corgi named Trinity (she came that way) and corgi-lab named Lowrider. Carolyn and I are transforming our backyard. And a book is on the way. ...Stay tuned ... Ken
