The Greatest Sheep Stealer who ever lived …

March 28, 2013

“We’re all like sheep who’ve wandered off and gotten lost. We’ve done our own thing, gone our own way. And God has piled all our sins, everything we’ve done wrong on him, on him.” Isaiah 53:6 The Message

“We’ve done our own thing” … that’s you and me in a nutshell. That’s what God sees. How could one man create such anger by touching lepers .. healing blind persons .. forgiving a woman by a well .. feeding thousands with a few loaves and fishes .. restore life to a dead man .. heal a paralyzed man .. let his feet be washed by a whore .. invite a few men to follow him .. offer anyone Life in his name .. and give his life for all of our “doing our own things”? What kind of God is this that walks into your life and doesn’t try to fix you. He doesn’t argue with you. He doesn’t list off all of your flaws .. failures .. and everyday sins. He doesn’t even try to convince you that the life you are living will only lead to loneliness. Instead, he offers you LIFE .. deeply loved .. fully forgiven .. filled with hope .. empowered to serve others .. and a promise that you will never walk alone. He was hunted down .. arrested .. scourged (another word for tortured) .. spit on .. humiliated .. nailed on a cross .. and died to rescue you from “doing your own thing”. One old pastor gave timely advice to a young pastor as he prepared to gloriously lead his people: “Sheep bite”! They not only do their own thing, but will turn on each other and abandon each other to save themselves. It’s not a pretty picture. But God stepped right into the center of our lives .. your life .. and offered His Life as the only cure for the cancer of doing-your-own-thing. Everything you have ever done wrong was “piled” onto Jesus. And everything about Jesus is now what defines your life. You may still stray into doing your own thing .. but .. Jesus will lead you away from that poison. You’ve been bought with His life. You don’t have to hang on to those old ways any longer. He has stepped into the darkness of your life. You’re free .. free in Christ. It’s not about you anymore. It’s about learning to love the life that Christ is living in you. And today …? It only takes a moment …

“Who are you after? .. They answered, ‘Jesus, the Nazarene. .. He said. ‘That’s me’ ” John 18:4-5 The Message

About Ken Chester

I love seeing Christ become alive and real in someone's life. It is amazing what happens when Jesus moves in and starts to renovate a life. When I'm not riding my road bike, I am usually walking our corgi named Trinity (she came that way) and corgi-lab named Lowrider. Carolyn and I are transforming our backyard. And a book is on the way. ...Stay tuned ... Ken
