“The Lord God commanded the man, saying, “from any tree of the garden you may eat freely; but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you will surely die.” Genesis 2:16-17 New American Standard
There are any number of options surrounding your life that promise an identity and a fulfilling life. You may have even wandered down a few of those paths only to find something missing. God designed you for relationship .. a relationship with Him that would fill your life with meaning .. purpose .. and belonging. Your relationship with Him would create an identity of who you are and what your life means and how you live your life. But the world tries ever so subtly to capture you with extra options of almost-true .. mostly-true .. and partly-true promises of an even better identity for living. The same garden tricks of the past still are at work today. God meant it when he warned that when you start reaching for “things” that don’t originate with Him or connect to Him .. you will begin to die. It probably won’t be a physical death but a kind of death that is lifeless on the inside. You can pretend on the outside that nothing has changed or that external pressures are to blame. It’s not the life that God wants for you. He offers you more than you can imagine in Christ. God’s garden counsel is just as sound today as it was in the beginning. Every time you try to substitute something in the place of Jesus Christ, you will begin to taste a form of death. The world around you will try to convince you that what you are tasting is not really death and dying. You’re really okay .. really alive .. really living .. just like everyone else. But you know you’re not alright. In Christ, all the fullness of life is found in you. You don’t have to go shopping .. make deals .. or work yourself to exhaustion to make your identity. Who you are .. What you are living for .. and How you live is found in Christ. The Cross covered your garden debt and all those false promises you’ve tried to substitute for faith .. life .. and identity through Christ. There is nothing in this world that can equal or compare to the life that Christ offers you in Him. It only takes a moment …
“For in Him, all the fullness of Deity dwells in bodily form, and in Him you have been made complete …” Colossians 2:9-10 New American Standard
