“When he was still a long way off, his father saw him. His heart pounding, he ran out, embraced him, and kissed him. The son started his speech: ‘Father, I’ve sinned against God, I’ve sinned against you; I don’t deserve to be called your son ever again.’ ” Luke 15:20-21 The Message
God has seen so much over history. He’s watched men and women clamor for acceptance. He’s watched men and women clutch onto His promises. He’s watched men and women cross over paths of obedience and disobedience when it is convenient. More importantly … He’s watched you. Your life hasn’t never been hidden .. even with all the sideshows of nations conspiring against nations for survival and control. All of the greatness and glory of deity is reduced to the image of a Father’s heart pounding when he saw coming home. He saw you when you were a long way off. He saw you working on “just the right words” to say when you arrived home. But God took a shortcut. He ran after you while you were a long way off. He didn’t cut any corners or save any time when he created the world and everything in it. But for you … He broke the rules and embraced you while you still smelled like a farm hand. He saw you a long way off in the Son’s grip. It doesn’t matter to Him .. He wants your whole life as you come running .. stumbling .. and plodding homeward. He is the Waiting One .. the Watching One … the Willing One whose grace grip upon you will not let go .. even when you’ve sinned against him .. even when you struggle to really believe and accept that God loves you enough to run after you. A Follower of Jesus is a Father-embraced .. grace-kissed .. forever-gripped son and daughter. If you are running .. run no more except into the Father’s embrace. If you are plodding step by step .. step into the accomplished will of Jesus for you today. As He said: “I hold on and don’t let go”. No one ever finds their way home on their own. You were seen a long way off and the Son was sent to rescue you and bring you safely home. It only takes a moment ..
“Every person the Father gives me eventually comes running to me. And once that person is with me, I hold on and don’t let go. I came down from heaven not to follow my own whim but to accomplish the will of the One who sent me.” John 6:37-38 The Message
