God’s a lousy poker player…

November 6, 2013

“I’m calling it quits on the kingdom of Israel .. I’ve run out of mercy. There’s no more forgiveness. .. You’ve become nobodies to me, and I God, am a nobody to you….” Hosea 1:4-9 The Message

Over and over again, God shows you all the cards He is holding. He doesn’t bluff. He doesn’t cheat. He doesn’t change the rules. But he does something every time when it comes to your life: He tells you about all the wrong ways you are trying to play “this game” of faith .. and then shows you exactly how to “play and win”. He asked a man to marry an unfaithful woman .. an almost impossible image to contain in your heart. He tells him up front that his children’s name will represent all the ways that His People have tried to play the very real game of faith … faithlessly. After she runs off, Hosea actually walks across town and “pays” a slaves price to buy back a woman who doesn’t love him or want to live with him. And what does God say about all of this. Hardly a page is turned and He is announcing a marriage that will last forever and pledges His faithfulness will all of his love and tenderness guaranteed. He doesn’t hold back anything to see if they (or you) will hold up their end of the marriage vows. He knows all the unfaithful places in your heart .. all the places where you try to find love .. and all the places where you try to hide. And what does He do over and over and over again? God walks across town in broad daylight and buys you back from an illegitimate lover. He endures all the jokes about being a loser for picking you .. all the ridicule for being so God-sized foolish .. and risks everything He is holding to buy you back. What God would ever write down such truth…? The One who lost everything to buy you back .. that’s Who. And Jesus? .. He says when you stop all your faith-playing and trust Him … “you’ll know me, God, for who I really am.” It only takes a moment …

“And now, here’s what I’m going to do: I’m going to start all over again. I’m taking her back out into the wilderness where we had our first date, and I’ll court her…. And then I’ll marry you for good — forever! I’ll marry you true and proper, in love and tenderness. Yes, I’ll marry you and neither leave you nor let you go. You’ll know me, God, for who I really am.” Hosea 2:14, 20 The Message

About Ken Chester

I love seeing Christ become alive and real in someone's life. It is amazing what happens when Jesus moves in and starts to renovate a life. When I'm not riding my road bike, I am usually walking our corgi named Trinity (she came that way) and corgi-lab named Lowrider. Carolyn and I are transforming our backyard. And a book is on the way. ...Stay tuned ... Ken
