Looking for work .. .

February 7, 2014

“Therefore they said to him, “What shall we do, so that we may work the works of God? Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom he has sent.” John 6:28-29 New American Standard

Once you’ve settled on Jesus .. or rather you realize that Jesus has settled on you and he isn’t going to give up on you or abandon you .. you begin to ask questions: “What do I need to be doing? How should I be living my faith? Where is God calling me?” Those questions and more are always floating around. Some men and women seem to find their “space” where their life and faith are joined and they feel God’s presence. Others try different means to serve God and wonder if they are making a difference. Jesus describes “work” with any interesting twist. He doesn’t talk about how much you’re doing .. how much you are accomplishing .. or what you need to be doing. He describes work as “believing”. At the heart of who you are and what you are doing, are you believing in the sufficiency of Christ for your life? It is easier to be active in Christian activities and events and not really be engaged with Christ in your life. You can even substitute doing something without believing and convince yourself that everything is okay. At least for awhile. But it’s not. Jesus doesn’t save to simply create a kingdom workforce. He saves to fill your life with his life .. to create in you a life-changing view of work and true worth. Your worth to God isn’t tied to how much you do. You’re worth all of His Son before you’ve done anything and that is the greatest gift you show The Lord in serving Him. You’re not working to prove your worth. You’re not doing something out of fear. You’re alive for the first time to truly love God and love Him openly in everything and with everyone. Jesus calls that believing and defines it as work. And even more amazing is that God is at work at this very moment creating in you the space for His Son to live through you. It’s time to get to work … believing. It only takes a moment…

“The fact is that what we are we owe to the hand of God upon us. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do those good deeds which God planned for us to do.” Ephesians 2:10 J. B. Phillips

About Ken Chester

I love seeing Christ become alive and real in someone's life. It is amazing what happens when Jesus moves in and starts to renovate a life. When I'm not riding my road bike, I am usually walking our corgi named Trinity (she came that way) and corgi-lab named Lowrider. Carolyn and I are transforming our backyard. And a book is on the way. ...Stay tuned ... Ken
