“So He came to a city of Samaria called Sychar; near the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph, and Jacob’s well was there. So Jesus, being wearied from His journey, was sitting this by the well. It was about the sixth hour.” John 4:5-6 New American Standard
What is God like? What you think about God will set the course of your life today. It’s impossible to imagine what Holiness looks like. One man found out that being sandal-less was required. Another man had to have a burning ember touch his lips. A doubting disciple was invited to put his fingers into once crucified nail holes. All three men would describe God differently … and all three would be absolutely correct. What about you? 206 pieces of calcium sat by a well in an undesirable location called Samaria. 206 pieces of calcium named Jesus .. the same pieces of calcium that holds you together .. are what God looked liked around noon time. He was tired .. weary .. and needed a break .. just like you. A woman approached him ready for a confrontation .. or at least a look of rejection. She was weary too. She was weary from trying to make life work .. to hold it all together .. fearful of everybody around her .. fearful of everything .. on edge. And God did the holiest thing possible: He asked her for a drink of water! That’s where you meet Jesus .. in all of the ordinary moments of your day. Most of the time we are too weary to stop .. too on edge to engage .. and too caught up in the world’s noise to be confronted by such a holy request. She pushed back but Jesus didn’t fight or argue. He just met her weariness with his willingness to give her life. A long time before that moment, Joseph summarized his life’s story: “what you meant for evil .. God meant for good.” Instead of payback, he promised blessing. It takes a long time to see good inside of evil and want blessing instead of punishment. If you find yourself weary .. it might be a good time to stop .. ask for a drink of water .. and maybe let down your guard for an even bigger drink of life! It only takes a moment….
“As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good in order to bring about this present result, to preserve many people alive”. Genesis 50:20 New American Standard
