What happened to normal …?

May 30, 2014

“…Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?” And Jesus answered and said to them, “It is not those who are well who need a physician, but those who are sick. I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance.” Luke 5:30-32 New American Standard

No one pictures God wasting time with the disqualified. At least “they” could do their part to warrant some attention and assistance. But “they” don’t. And yet Jesus walks right into the middle of their lives and sits down for dinner. This is the God who comes after you. All of his defenses are down. You are his whole agenda. He’s not worried what others are going to say or how long it will take. Why is it so hard for the righteous to feel compassion? Because being right leaves no room for error .. forgiveness .. or fellowship. When you’re right all the time .. you are always on edge .. unable to see a way through broken lives .. unwilling to share the same space. And suddenly you realize that Jesus isn’t looking at you as one who is flawed or fallen. You begin to realize that this Jesus actually wants to be in your company and wants you to be in his company .. flaws and all. You may struggle with sin for some time .. but with Jesus you won’t stay stuck. You’ll stumble but he’ll pick you up. You won’t walk alone anymore. God is a Holy Adopter. There is every shape .. size .. scared .. scarred .. grace-seized sinner all around him. And you’ll fit right in! He won’t let go. And just when you think you’ve got Him figured out … he goes and spends all night in prayer .. all night! The mission for your life required it. The mission of your life is uncompromising. When you belong to Jesus .. every meal makes room for another table guest. Someone is always willing to trust in who Jesus is rather than what “they” can do. He is an all-night God. He is the one true physician who doesn’t treat the sick .. he heals it with His life. And repentance? It’s no longer about being right. It’s about being made whole while realizing how wrong you’ve been. There’s nothing normal about how he works in your life. It only takes a moment …

“It was at this time that He went off to the mountain to pray, and He spent the whole night in prayer to God.” Luke 6:12 New American Standard

About Ken Chester

I love seeing Christ become alive and real in someone's life. It is amazing what happens when Jesus moves in and starts to renovate a life. When I'm not riding my road bike, I am usually walking our corgi named Trinity (she came that way) and corgi-lab named Lowrider. Carolyn and I are transforming our backyard. And a book is on the way. ...Stay tuned ... Ken
