Out With It …

Nov. 6, 2014

“When he was still a long way off, his father saw him. His heart pounded, he ran out, embraced him, and kissed him. The Son started his speech: ‘Father, I’ve sinned against God, I sinned before you; I don’t deserve to be called you son ever again.” Luke 15:20-21 The Message

Before he thought that His Father was looking… he thought about starting over.. maybe moving away .. creating a space to finally press into God .. make his own mark .. and maybe find himself. He wasn’t sure if he was crazy, but he wanted a chance. He finally couldn’t take it another day. No matter how much pain it caused, he had to come out with it: “Father, I want right now what’s coming to me.” He took it an ran right into the wildest storm of his life. He wasted it all .. nothing left for an emergency .. nothing much left of him. He found a job .. something to help get a meal. It was pigs but it could have been anything. Actually the pigs enjoyed life better than he did. And that made him want home. But what He really wanted was his Father. But he had blown it .. all of it. His last currency was unbeknownst to him, his most precious asset: “Father, I sinned against God, I sinned before you; I don’t deserve to be called your son ever again.” He didn’t know it, but it was his whole life described in faith through surrender. Jesus picked this story, this parable to describe how much larger God is against any self-centered-life-wasting reality of your life. You can waste it all with nothing or become wasted holding on to everything. When the Father sees you wandering back up the road .. He suspends all formalities to run into your arms, swallowing you up, welcoming you home. It’s not fair. You’ve wasted everything .. He wastes his reputation. You smell like pigs .. He smells like love. And the real currency you’ve spent is confession. It’s outlandish .. really. A party thrown for a party animal. Except it’s homecoming party. And whether you’ve lost it all or squandered nothing, you need this party to find out who you are … and who this God is you profess to believe in! Confession is the currency of heaven. C’mon, out with it … He won’t let go …

“I’ve been out of step with you for a long time, in the wrong since before I was born. What you’re after is truth from the inside out. Enter me, then, and conceive a new, true, life” Psalm 51:5-6 The Message

About Ken Chester

I love seeing Christ become alive and real in someone's life. It is amazing what happens when Jesus moves in and starts to renovate a life. When I'm not riding my road bike, I am usually walking our corgi named Trinity (she came that way) and corgi-lab named Lowrider. Carolyn and I are transforming our backyard. And a book is on the way. ...Stay tuned ... Ken
