To lead .. To leave .. And follow

December 11, 2014

“And as he passed by, he saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax booth, and he said to him, “Follow me.” And he rose and followed him.” Mark 2:14 English Standard

He was despised. So were his friends. He made good money .. but no amount could make him good. Two words changed everything: “Follow me”. There was no negotiation. To follow meant that he leave what he knew .. the only life he knew. Why risk everything to follow someone like Jesus? He didn’t promise him anything. He didn’t offer him anything. He simply invited a father’s son to join him. The other guys with Jesus probably couldn’t believe it. Now they would all be grouped together. There were followers of Jesus. The job description was fairly simple: learn to trust Me .. and learn to love like Me. When asked why you follow this same Jesus .. all you have to do is point to his name: “God saves”. It sums up your life and describes that even today you have to give up what you know to follow this One who invites you to know him. The only exchange required would be his life for yours and your life serving others. You probably aren’t a Levi.. despised .. suspicious .. and lonely on the inside. But Jesus knows this about you. If you are going to follow Him, you’re going to have to give up the life you know to take up the life he will give you. You’ll learn to trust .. wait .. and love. Jesus has your life before him: “Follow me”. He won’t let you down because He won’t let to. It only takes a minute….

“She will bring a son to birth, and when she does, you Joseph, will name him Jesus — ‘God saves’ — because he will save his people from their sins.” Matt. 1:21 The Message

About Ken Chester

I love seeing Christ become alive and real in someone's life. It is amazing what happens when Jesus moves in and starts to renovate a life. When I'm not riding my road bike, I am usually walking our corgi named Trinity (she came that way) and corgi-lab named Lowrider. Carolyn and I are transforming our backyard. And a book is on the way. ...Stay tuned ... Ken
