Perspective by Dick Halverson

December 23, 2015

Some words are seeds that planted and grow into God’s now: Dick Halverson was a pastor and Chaplain of the U.S. Senate. He stood in the places of power but spoke of the only truth that had the power to redeem, heal, and transform lives. The following are his word: “Dear Friend, The witness of the New Testament Christians was not a sales pitch! The simply shared what they had received each in his own way. Theirs was not a formal prepared, carefully work-out presentation with a “gimmick” to manipulate conversation and a “closer” for an on-the-spot decision. Theirs was a spontaneous, irrepressible, effervescent enthusiasm of those who had met the most fascinating Person Who ever lived. They had had an encounter with Jesus Christ and it simply could not be concealed! Their “school of witnessing” was the school of the Spirit in which they matriculated continuously. They were not indoctrinated — they were oriented … They witnessed – not because they had to – but because they could not help it … And Madison Avenue, with all its twentieth century, sophisticated know-how, cannot improve on the strategy. Nothing is more convincing than the simple, unembellished word of a satisfied customer. American business spends millions of advertising dollars annually in an attempt to achieve it. The simplest Christians does it effortlessly when he tell a friend what Christ means to him. Authentic Christian witness is born of the Spirit … not produced by rhetoric.” “You shall receive power after the Holy Spirit is come upon you, and you shall be witnesses unto me … Acts 1:8” (July 20, 1983)

About Ken Chester

I love seeing Christ become alive and real in someone's life. It is amazing what happens when Jesus moves in and starts to renovate a life. When I'm not riding my road bike, I am usually walking our corgi named Trinity (she came that way) and corgi-lab named Lowrider. Carolyn and I are transforming our backyard. And a book is on the way. ...Stay tuned ... Ken
