“Let me give you a new command: Love one another. In the same way I loved you, love one another. This is how everyone will recognize that you are my disciples — when they see the love you have for one another.” John 13:34-35 MSG
A lot happens over a meal. Jesus washed dirty feet. It was a symbol of hospitality and being a servant. His disciples were left speechless. Why would a sea-walking .. loaves and fishes multiplying .. leper cleansing .. adultery forgiving .. healer of every disease and illness .. and parable speaking rabbi put his hands on twelve pairs of feet? They received their life-job assignment: love each other in such a way that others will recognize MY LIFE in you. They will know you have been with ME. Those after dinner instructions are still in place for your life today. How well are you loving? Would someone see you as a disciple of Jesus by the way you love .. not the explanation you use? Does the way you love start a conversation? Jesus didn’t write down the rules of love. He just described it in relationship with Him. If you need to know whether you are “loving”: is it connected to Jesus? Are you closer to Him because of it … and are others drawn to Jesus through it? It”s easy to just go through the motions .. love for a moment .. or settle for that’s-good-enough .. it’s all I can do .. and walk away. The kind of love Jesus is talking about interrupts your schedule .. intersects daily plans .. irritates you when you least expect it to .. and shows you just how little or how much of this Jesus is filling your life. You may need to set aside time to stop .. reset .. refocus .. return .. and be renewed by the FootWasher. You won’t hear words of condemnation. If you do .. it won’t be Jesus voice. He has already settled the condemnation question. He became your condemnation. His commandment is as new today as it was after dinner with some dusty-feet disciples. Do you have time for Him to wash your feet today? It only takes a moment ..
