“I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing.” John 15:5 NASB

Jesus gives us the very secret of His life: life in Him is fruitful. That one image can produce so much anxiety and worry about whether you are “really” trusting in Christ  and letting Him live His life through you. It is tempting to look at other lives and compare your own as to whether you are being fruitful or not. But Jesus doesn’t compare your life to others. He draws your whole attention to His life and whether you are focused on Him or not. Your calling .. your role .. and your part is to abide in Christ. That means to literally .. yes literally .. place your whole you .. everything that makes up your life .. yes everything .. on Christ. It is amazing all the little things you will notice that for whatever reason or not you won’t place on Christ. This thought .. that situation .. those circumstances .. the list of things you want to get done .. your finances .. your worries .. your relationships .. and all the little things you don’t want to bother Jesus about. Jesus is very clear about your life: if you are to be fruitful .. you must abide in Him. It’s tempting to substitute the word successful .. happy .. fulfilled .. content .. or purposeful for fruitful. His words seem stark: “for apart from Me you can do nothing”. But actually He is telling you that you can do everything by abiding in Him. It means remaining with Him against the urge to take control and manage things on your own. He’s already told you what your life will look like in Him: fruitful.  And that word is worth more than any substitute you can devise. “I hold on and don’t let go.” He knows about fruitfulness … it only takes a moment …

“Every person the Father gives me eventually comes running to me. And once that person is with me, I hold on and don’t let go. I came down from heaven not to follow my own whim but to accomplish the will of the One who sent me.” John 6:38 MSG

About Ken Chester

I love seeing Christ become alive and real in someone's life. It is amazing what happens when Jesus moves in and starts to renovate a life. When I'm not riding my road bike, I am usually walking our corgi named Trinity (she came that way) and corgi-lab named Lowrider. Carolyn and I are transforming our backyard. And a book is on the way. ...Stay tuned ... Ken
