A roof with a view

May 13, 2016

“Some men arrived carrying a paraplegic on a stretcher. They were looking for a way to get into the house and set him before Jesus. When they couldn’t find a way in because of the crowd, they went up on the roof, removed some tiles, and let him down in the middle of everyone, right in front of Jesus. Impressed by their bold belief, he said, “Friend, I forgive your sins.” Luke 5:18-20 Message

What does God look like? He looked mildly amused by the faith of four friends. The only way to raise their paralyzed friend up was to let him down. He never says a word .. but Jesus sees the faith of his friends. He knew what the paralyzed man was thinking: “Maybe this time will be different .. I don’t know how to ask .. What if this Jesus just says no? .. What if I try to believe one more time and it doesn’t work? .. I can’t believe my friends are making me do this…!” Jesus knows about every murmuring thought we have when it comes to finding wholeness .. healing .. faith .. and day-to-day trust. The problem with Jesus is He fits in at all the wrong places. He’s welcomed at a dinner party by dislocated .. dismissed .. and decidedly unacceptable people. He’s always comfortable with “outsiders”. It’s the “insiders” who feel uncomfortable and self-conscious. They can’t see the heart of God through the roof. They can’t see changed hearts through their hard hearts. Jesus never competes for attention or demands an audience. He invites the lonely .. the lost .. and the unloved to get up and walk and sit down and enjoy a nice meal. Who would ever imagine God stooping so low? But it’s the low places where He found you. The surroundings didn’t matter. Whether elegance or emptiness .. Jesus has called you to a “changed life”. Once He moves in .. He knows how to make the real changes you’ve wanted for a long time. It only takes a moment …

“Levi gave a large dinner at his home for Jesus. Everybody was there, tax men and other disreputable characters as guests at the dinner. The Pharisees and their religion scholars came to his disciples greatly offended. “What is he doing eating and drinking with crooks and ‘sinners’?” Luke 5:29-30 Message

About Ken Chester

I love seeing Christ become alive and real in someone's life. It is amazing what happens when Jesus moves in and starts to renovate a life. When I'm not riding my road bike, I am usually walking our corgi named Trinity (she came that way) and corgi-lab named Lowrider. Carolyn and I are transforming our backyard. And a book is on the way. ...Stay tuned ... Ken

Ken, you have a beautiful gift for conveying the Gospel in such palatable and refreshing ways. Thank you for bringing me such fresh insight into the Bible story of a roof with a view.
