The ScarFinder’s reach …

“A leper came to him, begging on his knees, “If you are want to, you can cleanse me.” Deeply moved, Jesus put out his hand, touched him, and said, “I want to. Be clean.” Mark 1:40-41 The Message

He asked the only question he had left inside. He didn’t know that the One he was asking would become the whole disease that was eating him from the inside. “If you want to .. you can cleanse me.” He was begging more than asking. Even if it meant he was breaking all the rules. Pain does that after awhile. The rules fade against the agony of pain and loneliness. But it didn’t matter. His desperation drove him. Maybe it drives you too. So … you try to find your own healing .. steal a moment of affection .. pretend to be normal again .. or try and bargain with God. You promise you’ll be a better man or woman. You’ll try harder. You won’t complain ever again. You won’t ask for anything else. If only…. . Sin creates false boundaries of trust and fractured self-trust. Fear creates unrelenting monsters. Shame creates suffocating silence. Anger can suffocate you too, if you hold it all in. The only One who is never repulsed by what we carry is  Jesus. If you’ve ever been rejected .. discarded .. left disfigured .. isolated and unloved … Jesus has reached across every lie .. deceit .. and rejection. In the leper’s case, He became the leper’s leprosy the moment He touched him. The leper’s scars became His. The deepest words of healing and hope invaded his heart when he heard Jesus say: I want to.  It had been a long time since anyone had “wanted him”. Those are same words are for you. Jesus exchanged the leper’s desperation with an even deeper touch of grace. He restores the deadened nerve endings of trust. He knows every pain .. every depth of suffering .. and exactly how you feel living in this broken world. His scars are the holy archives of every form of sin, pain, disease, rejection, and un-love ever sown into this world. You can’t become the sin .. disease .. and pain in others. But you can be the friend of the One who did become all of that .. for you .. and for others around you. It only takes a moment …

“He was looked down on and passed over, a man who suffered, who knew pain firsthand.” Isaiah 53:4 The Message

About Ken Chester

I love seeing Christ become alive and real in someone's life. It is amazing what happens when Jesus moves in and starts to renovate a life. When I'm not riding my road bike, I am usually walking our corgi named Trinity (she came that way) and corgi-lab named Lowrider. Carolyn and I are transforming our backyard. And a book is on the way. ...Stay tuned ... Ken
