Tears .. Kisses .. and Dirty Feet

October 19, 2017

“Just then a woman of the village, the town harlot, having learned that Jesus was a guest in the home of the Pharisee, came with a bottle of very expensive perfume and stood at his feet, weeping, raining tears on his feet. Letting down her hair, she dried his feet, kissed them, and anointed them with the perfume. ” Luke 7:37-39 The Message

Survival. After awhile you’re just trying to survive. You reach a point where you can’t feel. You tell yourself that no amount of mercy can truly cover your broken shame. There’s just no way you’ll ever be able to lift your face toward heaven .. let alone think there is a heavenly Father who loves you. She had believed the lies in the beginning but time and betrayal had stolen what God had created in beauty. There was no way back. The way forward only offered more misery .. rejection .. abuse .. lies .. and finally the end. Some scars are so hidden behind facades that no amount of success or achievement can salve over all the pain and humiliation. She wasn’t invited but brought the most expensive gift in the room: her tears. He said it felt like rain .. washing over his feet .. cleansing what would only get dirty tomorrow. It may have been the finest gift He ever received during his lifetime. He had been part of the design team behind tear ducts and now they graced his skin. She didn’t ask for forgiveness. But then He said those words: I forgive your sins. Her life’s resume was washed clean in an instant. Every act erased. Every lie covered in truth. Every dark and sleepless night bathed in peace. The Soon-to-be-Scarred-One looked into her face and restored the beauty stolen. There isn’t one moment of your life that His scars cannot wash and heal. Jesus knows the power of tears. Behind His is a fountain of blood capable of making whole unfathomable lies .. disgrace .. shame .. humiliation .. and addicting brokenness. If He can do all this at a dinner party, what can He do in you? It only takes a moment…

Then he spoke to her: “I forgive your sins.” That set the dinner guests talking behind his back: “Who does he think he is, forgiving sins!” He ignored them and said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you. Go in peace.” Luke 7:48-50 The Message

About Ken Chester

I love seeing Christ become alive and real in someone's life. It is amazing what happens when Jesus moves in and starts to renovate a life. When I'm not riding my road bike, I am usually walking our corgi named Trinity (she came that way) and corgi-lab named Lowrider. Carolyn and I are transforming our backyard. And a book is on the way. ...Stay tuned ... Ken
