The Real St. Nick

October 20, 2017

“Late one night he visited Jesus and said, “Rabbi, we all know you’re a teacher straight from God. No one could do all the God-pointing, God-revealing acts you do if God weren’t in on it.” John 3:2 The Message

Nicodemus showed up at night. He didn’t want to be seen. It might show a flaw or professional weakness. So he chose the dark to ask about the light. He wasn’t wounded by outward evidence. His scars were more from doing right .. and trying to do the right thing everytime. He knew the right things to believe in his head .. but his heart craved something more. No one would accuse him of being judgmental or dismissing anyone of lesser stature. His humility was real .. aimed toward good ends .. God focused even. Yet, something was missing. This Teacher was different. He approached others before they approached Him. He noticed that whoever encountered this Teacher .. left with a foundation of family affirmation and a real spirit of hope. They weren’t dismissed with probationary standing. They acted like He, the Nazarene, knew everything about them, even more than they knew about themselves. He actually treated them whole before they had done anything. Who was this man? Nicodemus had to apply to be a disciple. He didn’t rest on accomplishments or title. He applied by approaching Jesus and asking a question. And Jesus respectfully met him and extravagantly answered his heart’s deepest longing. “This is how much God loved the world. He gave his Son, his one and only Son. And this is why: so that no one need be destroyed; by believing in him, anyone can have a whole and lasting life.”(3:16)  Not all scars are the result of some moral or mental violence ingested or acted out. Some scars are formed innocently enough at first sight, but compound over time until you’re too paralyzed to ask for help .. or seek it. That didn’t stop Jesus from extending grace to Nicodemus. He spoke right into his heart and mind .. making a prominent rabbi whole for the first time in his life. It appears that Nicodemus only needed one night time class. Not long afterwards, he remembered his Night-Teacher’s words when he publicly ask to take care of his crucified body. It just shows how patient Jesus will be with your life as well. It only takes a moment …

About Ken Chester

I love seeing Christ become alive and real in someone's life. It is amazing what happens when Jesus moves in and starts to renovate a life. When I'm not riding my road bike, I am usually walking our corgi named Trinity (she came that way) and corgi-lab named Lowrider. Carolyn and I are transforming our backyard. And a book is on the way. ...Stay tuned ... Ken
