The Scandal scar…

October 27, 2017

“Jonah was furious. He lost his temper. He yelled at God, “God! I knew it—when I was back home, I knew this was going to happen! That’s why I ran off to Tarshish! I knew you were sheer grace and mercy, not easily angered, rich in love, and ready at the drop of a hat to turn your plans of punishment into a program of forgiveness!”  “So God, if you won’t kill them, kill me! I’m better off dead!” Jonah 4:1-3 The Message

It’s hard to imagine grace leaving scars, but it does. It scars those areas in your heart where you’ve refused to let God work. And then God goes and does something like Jonah: He forgives 120,000 people. They didn’t deserve it. They were the worst of the worst. Surely God isn’t going to just give them a pass. Jesus created the same reaction, except the very ones who should have rejoiced became incensed. They measured who was good enough. Ever done that? Ever been amazed at God’s extravagance being wasted on disreputable persons? With Jesus, scandals unleash the grace that can bring a life back from the dead. They haven’t earned it yet they act like the freest people on the planet. Jonah got furious with God for forgiveness. He wanted to die. The religious ones got furious with Jesus for forgiveness. They wanted him to die. And so He did. He turned expected plans of punishment into an indefatigable program of forgiveness. Grace does that. Just as the Lord came for you .. so you can walk toward the unexpected as well. Which way will you walk today? Away from .. or .. all in towards?  It only takes takes a moment …

“Later a few religion scholars and Pharisees got on him. “Teacher, we want to see your credentials. Give us some hard evidence that God is in this. How about a miracle?” Jesus said, “You’re looking for proof, but you’re looking for the wrong kind. All you want is something to titillate your curiosity, satisfy your lust for miracles. The only proof you’re going to get is what looks like the absence of proof: Jonah-evidence. Like Jonah, three days and nights in the fish’s belly, the Son of Man will be gone three days and nights in a deep grave.“ Matthew 12:38-40 The Message

About Ken Chester

I love seeing Christ become alive and real in someone's life. It is amazing what happens when Jesus moves in and starts to renovate a life. When I'm not riding my road bike, I am usually walking our corgi named Trinity (she came that way) and corgi-lab named Lowrider. Carolyn and I are transforming our backyard. And a book is on the way. ...Stay tuned ... Ken
